halloweeny books i want to read…(someday)

Isn’t Halloweeny just the best word?!?

I get joy from it, okay? Don’t gimme that look.

Just about everyone goes on and on about how this time of year is perfect for reading creepy, thriller, horror, Halloweeny books. And I don’t disagree! There are tons of said books that I would love to be picking up right now.

Except…it’s not going to happen. Simply because I have a bazillion other books I’ve been looking forward to, and I’m not very motivated to set those aside for seasonal reading.

SO. I’m putting this list together as more of a hypothetical one, although maybe it’ll actually be my TBR next Halloween? Who knows!

Read on for 8 Halloweeny books I want to read (someday).

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

17162156Halloweeny factor: It’s in the title! Peculiar children, all kept together on a deserted island. Plus, the creepy photographs included in the book totally add to the Halloweeny aesthetic.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks

8908Halloweeny factor: Again, in the title: ZOMBIES. Anything apocalypse is thrilling for me. Does it get much scarier?!

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire

37442Halloweeny factor: It’s about a witch with green skin! Basically the origin story of Wicked Witch of the West, if my understanding is correct. Oh, Elphaba. I’m not sure how scary this one is, but it still seems like it fits the mood of the season.

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

17934530Halloweeny factor: There’s something mysterious happening in Area X–some people go there and never return, others come back shadows of themselves. A team is sent to figure out what’s going on. The synopsis gives me major LOST vibes, which I L O V E D watching on TV! This sounds like a great thriller.

The Silkworm by Robert Gailbraith (J. K. Rowling)

18214414 Halloweeny factor: This might not be super creepy, but I’ve read book #1, The Cuckoo’s Calling, and this is a solid mystery series as far as I can see. A tid bit of thriller is usually the perfect amount for me.

Before the Fall by Noah Hawley

26245850Halloweeny factor: Passengers suddenly disappear from thin air while on a light to NYC. Great premise for a thriller, if you ask me! I’m pretty sure I added this to my TBR because Maggie Stiefvater wrote a rave review for it. I totally trust her opinion, so it makes this list.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Halloweeny factor: Another obvious one…it’s Frankenstien! Experimental creatures / monsters freak me out. So creepy. However, I have heard that while this story is suspenseful, it’s not as scary as you might expect…

The Diviners by Libba Bray

Halloweeny factor:
Okay, this one is a bit of a cheat because I’m currently listening to it on audiobook. But! I hadn’t planned to read this–it was all very spontaneous–and it fits so perfectly on this list. Summoning spirits, demons, murders across New York City…super Halloweeny.

  1. I made a halloween list of books i read, scheduled to post for tomorrow and Frankenstein was one of them! Definitely a strange book, kind of confusing but that just adds to the creep factor. Definitely should read it when you get a chance! Love this list, totally agree 🙂
